Genre and Sub-genre
Genre
A film genre is a way of grouping films in categories based on the similarities between the effect that movie has on the audience after/while watching.
The dirctor could eitha be trying to create;
- Fear in the audience (Horror)
- They could be trying to send off a psychological message that makes the audince think and try and solve the twists shown in the movie for themselves (Thriller)
- They could be attempting to geive the audience an anxious feeling woth lost of drama and action (Action movie)
- We could get a movie with lost of animation or one that appeals mainly to children (Children's movie)
- You could get a movies that appeal to audiences of all ages (Family movie)
- The director could have the main aim of making the audience laugh/feel joyful (comedy)
- The film could be baised on love/relationships and have a target audience of mainly women and couples (Romance)
- The movie could have a lot of twists and turns and could involve a lot of drama and a bit of action (Drama movie)
The genre of a movei could be porrayed in many different ways. It could be shown through the diegetic/non-diegetic sound/music e.g. if the music is quite dark and sinicter mostly during the scenes containg the antagonist then this could suggest a thriller genre. The mise en scene of the movie e.g. if there in a dark old big house then this could suggest a horror movie containing the supernatural. The editing e.g. if there was a lot of fast pace editing throughout most of the movie then this could suggest an action movie.
Sub-genre
Sub-genre's are seperate categories within a particular genre. This is also baised on the message the director is trying to portray and is shown to the audience through the four micro features. Some sub-genre's could be a Rom-com which is a romanitic comedy, an Action thriller, a dramatic horror and a action adventure etc.
