Research

I decided to analyse this previous student opening. This opening is very good as it is included in the 'Film Opening Hall of Fame', however it seems to break some of the conventions of film openings. For example, the title of the film 'Violet' is usually shown first and the director is shown last to establish importance. But in this case, the director is shown first and the title is shown after the main cast. The order is wrong but nonetheless the opening is fantastic.

Sound:

The music used is very eerie and creepy. It suits the opening very well. It almost crosses the border between thriller and horror.

Editing:

The editing of this opening is fantastic. The group have utilised match cuts very well to give the illusion that the protagonist, or perhaps antagonist, is somewhat a spirit or demon. The text used to show the title and so on is well matched. They also used distortion to indicate what type of film it is.

Mise en Scene:

The Mise en Scene in this student film opening is fantastic. Everything used points towards what type of film it's going to turn out to be, which is exactly what a film opening should do. One of the first shots shown is of a viola, more commonly known as a violet lily. This links back to the title of the film and shows that the prop is significant in the film.

Camera:

The camera shots are slightly shaky, which gives the film a feeling of realism which adds to the suspense. They also use point of view to show the view and mindset of, I assume, the girl who is the antagonist. The opening suggests she was murdered and the protagonist has some sort of link to her.
