Question One:

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?


The typical conventions of film openings are as follows:

Title of the film

Establishing of the Director and Main Cast

Institutional logos (for production and distribution company)

Panning shot (usually) of location to establish where the film is set.

Key characters are shown. Throughout the opening of the film main characters get a lot of screen time to establish them as that. 

Music. (Sets the mood and the tone of the film so the audience can identify the genre of the film.

Normally, the storylines of films go as followed (in order):

• Introduction of Protagonist
• Introduction of Antagonist
• Introduction of Protagonist's love interest (if there is one)
• Introduction of other important characters
• Story is first calm (the equilibrium), then problem appears to create a 'storm' and build suspense for the story
• Then the problem gets bigger until the storyline reaches its climax
• Protagonist usually solves problem, gets love interest to fall in love, and the story returns to its state of equilibrium.

However, the storyline conventions are not needed because we only created a thriller opening.




I will be using the Taking of Pelham 123 (1974) as an example to compare how my media project uses, challenges and develops conventions of a real media project.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

As you can see, it follows the conventions of the opening titles perfectly. First, showing the title of the film, then the actors, then the music producers and costume designers and such. then the most important are saved until the last, like the producer, director and so on.

'Inside'

Like the Taking of Pelham One Two Three, it follows the conventions of the opening titles perfectly. Showing the Director and Producer last with the actors and so on being shown after the title of the film. It challenges the conventions of media products by placing the opening credits during the setting shots, which is not like the Taking of Pelham One Two Three.

I did an interview with a few people from my target audience about why my film appealed to them and what things in particular they liked about the micro features and why they liked it. The video below is showing the feedback that they gave.

I also showed their reactions while they were viewing my movie so that we could see from their body language whether they really enjoyed it or not.

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In almost all film openings you will see credits that show the film title, Production Company and actors. You often see the production logo and distributor generally within or before the titles and in most cases the genre is usually established, which could be by the music or by other elements. Many film openings are usually between 2-3mins long however in some cases this may change depending on whether the film is a major blockbuster; this could be up to 5mins long. During the opening stages, the key characters are introduced in which most cases the antagonist and protagonist are recognised. All of these factors are known as ‘The conventions of a film opening’.

Within the conventions of a film opening, you also have the conventions of a title sequence. A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their key credit productions and cast members. If you remember in my earlier posts, I described a title sequence as being a hierarchy that follows the order of who is more important than who.

This site contributed largely towards the making of our thriller. It showed us screenshots of different film openings which was extremely helpful.

My thoughts on the whole experience of filming, editing and creating our film opening.

Editing - STP

At the start of the course we got an introduction on how to do very simple things, such has how to bring projects from Final Cut Pro (FCP) to Soundtrack Pro (SP).

How to bring a clip to SP and and drop it there

How to get the clips/sounds we required from SP

How to bring the clip/sound to our timeline and then drop it

Put it at a specific part of our timeline

Lay and Overlay, resulting in a better effect

Length of the clip (short/medium/long)

Changing the volume of the whole clip

Exporting the file back but only so that their is only one row of submixers instead of 5 or however many we decided to use 

We made sure we added these skills to our real opening, to make sure our film had that real feel of cinematography.

Editing -Slow Motion

Because we've taken Intertextuality from Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 we decided to also incorporate some of the slow motion.

We figured out how to do it. This is another thing that as group can say have added to our continuously growing list of skills.

Motion Tracking/Key Framing

This aspect of the editing was very difficult, although our opening was inspired by Phonebooth, we used intertextuality from Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. A rectangle is introduced unto the screen in a sliding motion but as it slides off the screen the Titles are revealed, this wasn't easy to do.


Felix who is a pro at this technical stuff however with some help from the teachers, we found a way to do it. We didn't put it throughout the entire opening because it takes to long to do and isn't easy to do even when you know how.

Editing

We had become used to Final Cut Pro but however their was so much more we could do, we learnt that we could actually change the colour of the shot, completely changing the impact of Mise en Scene, giving the film more of a cinematography feel.

We went to colour correction and found 3 circles full of colours, from reds to blacks, in every shade that we could edit our film to look like.

Reds

In the end we settled for a "bluey" tint, so it could give off an odd, cold, isolate feeling which relates to our opening.
